Tasting Notes: The Mastrojanni Brunello di Montalcino presents a brilliant, intense ruby-red color with an inviting and open-hearted nose that blends ripe plum, red berries, and black cherry notes with hints of fragrant spice, balsamic, and blond tobacco. On the palate, the wine is tonic and dynamic, with a core of juicy cherry fruit and subtle notes of chocolate and vanilla that are lifted by bright acidity and fine, elegant tannins. The finish is savory and mineral, with a pleasing and persistent length.
Estate History: The Mastrojanni estate was founded in 1975 by Gabriele Mastrojanni, a Roman lawyer who saw the un-tapped potential of the virgin land and ancient farms in the southeastern area of Montalcino, an area known as Castelnuovo dell'Abate. The estate became known for its traditional winemaking philosophy, utilizing large oak barrels for aging with a low-intervention approach. In 2008, the Illy Group (famous for Illy coffee) acquired the winery, bringing further investment and resources while keeping the established winemaker, Andrea Machetti. Today, the winery continues its commitment to quality under the ownership of Francesco Illy, focusing on organic cultivation principles.
